Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Tourism Information Officer to join our local council hub in Buffalo. This role is crucial for providing exceptional service to visitors, offering comprehensive information about local attractions, events, dining, accommodation, and transportation. You will be the friendly face of Buffalo, helping visitors make the most of their stay and ensuring they have a memorable experience. This position requires excellent communication skills, a deep knowledge of the Buffalo area, and a passion for customer service. You will work in a dynamic environment, engaging with a diverse range of people from around the world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and up-to-date information on local attractions, events, services, and amenities to visitors in person, via phone, and email.
  • Assist visitors with planning itineraries, booking tours, and making reservations for accommodation or dining.
  • Distribute promotional materials, maps, brochures, and other informational resources.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge base of local tourism offerings, including historical sites, cultural venues, natural parks, and upcoming events.
  • Handle inquiries and resolve visitor issues or complaints with professionalism and efficiency.
  • Collect visitor feedback and contribute to reports on visitor trends and popular inquiries.
  • Collaborate with local businesses, tourism operators, and community organizations to stay informed and promote their offerings.
  • Operate point-of-sale systems for merchandise or ticket sales if applicable.
  • Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the information center.

Required Skills

  • Proven customer service experience, ideally in a tourism or hospitality setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Buffalo and the surrounding Erie County area.
  • Problem-solving abilities and a calm demeanor under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Tourism, Hospitality, Communications, or a related field.
  • Experience with tourism-specific reservation or information management systems.
  • Proficiency in a second language (e.g., Spanish, French, German).
  • Familiarity with local government operations or community outreach programs.
