Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and physically capable Public Works Labourer to join our Infrastructure Projects team. In this hands-on role, you will be instrumental in the construction, maintenance, and repair of critical public infrastructure across the Cairns region. This includes roads, footpaths, stormwater drainage, parks, and other essential community assets. You will work as part of a supportive team, contributing to projects that directly benefit our residents and visitors, all while adhering to the highest safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general labouring duties on construction and maintenance sites, including digging, trenching, raking, and shoveling.
  • Assist skilled tradespersons (e.g., plumbers, carpenters, road workers) with various tasks.
  • Operate a range of hand and power tools safely and effectively, as instructed.
  • Load and unload materials and equipment, ensuring proper storage and handling.
  • Maintain a clean and organised work environment, including site clean-up and waste removal.
  • Adhere strictly to all WHS policies, procedures, and safety instructions.
  • Participate in traffic control duties as required, under appropriate supervision.
  • Conduct routine inspections of work areas and equipment, reporting any hazards or defects.

Required Skills

  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform manual labour in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of construction materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
  • Reliable, punctual, and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Current C-Class (Car) Driver's License.
  • Current White Card (Construction Induction Card).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in civil construction, landscaping, or general labouring.
  • Experience operating small plant equipment (e.g., plate compactors, jackhammers).
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Additional heavy vehicle licenses (e.g., MR, HR).
