Job Description
Ascension Saint Thomas, a leading healthcare provider in Nashville, TN, is seeking a dedicated and meticulous Surgical Instrument Sterilization Tech to join our essential back-office team. This is a crucial full-time, on-site role that directly contributes to patient safety and quality care by ensuring all surgical instruments are perfectly sterile and ready for use. As a Surgical Instrument Sterilization Tech, you will play a vital role behind the scenes, responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment. Your work ensures that our surgical teams have access to sterile tools, preventing infections and supporting successful patient outcomes. This position operates within a dynamic hospital environment, requiring adherence to strict protocols and a commitment to excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, sort, and decontaminate soiled surgical instruments and equipment.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and proper working order.
- Assemble instrument trays according to established specifications and guidelines.
- Operate various sterilization equipment, including steam autoclaves and other sterilization methods, ensuring proper cycle parameters.
- Maintain accurate records of sterilization processes and instrument inventory.
- Adhere strictly to all infection control, safety, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Transport sterile supplies to appropriate storage areas within the hospital.
- Collaborate effectively with surgical teams, nurses, and other hospital staff to ensure timely instrument availability.
Required Skills
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and established protocols accurately.
- Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and data entry.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights (up to 25 lbs), and push/pull carts.
- Strong commitment to patient safety and quality standards.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure team environment.
- No prior experience required; comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician (CSPT) from a recognized organization (e.g., CBSPD, IAHCSMM).
- Previous experience in a healthcare setting, even in a supportive or clerical capacity, or a manufacturing/production environment.
