Job Description

We are excited to offer an Avian & Exotic Animal Vet Intern position at our thriving Geelong clinic. This unique opportunity is designed for enthusiastic new graduates or final-year veterinary students eager to gain hands-on experience and specialized knowledge in the field of avian and exotic animal medicine. You will work alongside experienced veterinarians, contributing to the care, diagnosis, and treatment of a diverse range of species, from parrots and reptiles to small mammals and wildlife. This is a foundational role, providing comprehensive training and mentorship in a supportive environment, focusing on developing your clinical skills and confidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians with physical examinations, diagnostics, and treatments for avian and exotic animal patients.
  • Learn and perform basic veterinary procedures under direct supervision.
  • Prepare examination rooms and surgical suites, ensuring sterility and organisation.
  • Monitor anaesthesia and assist in surgical procedures.
  • Administer medications and treatments as directed by senior veterinarians.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and assist with client communication.
  • Participate in daily ward rounds and case discussions.
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development through mentorship and provided resources.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program.
  • Strong passion for avian and exotic animal medicine.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • High level of empathy and compassion for animals and their owners.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced clinical setting.
  • Basic computer proficiency for record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior volunteer or observational experience in a veterinary clinic, especially with exotic animals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare.
  • Enthusiasm for research or special projects related to exotic animal health.
