Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated individual to join our team as an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Program Intern. This is an unparalleled opportunity for aspiring professionals to gain hands-on experience and contribute meaningfully to our ASD support services within Canterbury. As an intern, you will work closely with our experienced team, assisting in the implementation of support programs, learning about best practices in ASD intervention, and helping to create a nurturing environment for individuals with ASD. This entry-level position is designed for individuals with a strong desire to learn and make a difference; no prior experience is required, and full training will be provided to ensure your success in this vital role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of ASD-focused activities and workshops under supervision.
  • Support program staff in day-to-day administrative tasks, including record-keeping and material organization.
  • Observe and learn from experienced professionals in various therapeutic and support settings.
  • Contribute to the creation of engaging and accessible resources for program participants.
  • Help maintain a safe, inclusive, and stimulating environment for individuals with ASD.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, debriefs, and ongoing training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Engage with program participants and their families in a respectful and supportive manner.
  • Assist with data collection and reporting related to program outcomes where appropriate.

Required Skills

  • Genuine interest and empathy towards individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to listen and engage effectively.
  • Strong organizational abilities and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant degree program (e.g., Psychology, Education, Social Work, Healthcare, Childhood Studies).
  • Previous volunteer experience in a care, support, educational, or community setting.
  • Basic understanding of safeguarding principles and practices.
  • First Aid certification or willingness to obtain it shortly after commencing the internship.
  • Familiarity with neurodiversity-affirming approaches.
