Job Description
We are seeking an exceptionally talented and experienced VFX Technical Director (TD) to join our innovative team in Manchester. This role is pivotal in bridging the gap between artistic vision and technical execution, focusing on the development and maintenance of tools, pipelines, and workflows that enable our artists to achieve stunning visual effects. The successful candidate will possess a deep understanding of VFX production processes, strong programming skills, and a passion for solving complex technical challenges. This position is open to global talent and we offer comprehensive support for the Global Talent Visa application process.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain robust tools, scripts, and plugins primarily using Python and C++ to enhance existing VFX pipelines.
- Collaborate closely with artists, supervisors, and other TDs to understand production needs and provide effective technical solutions.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues across various departments and software, ensuring smooth production workflows.
- Optimize existing tools and processes for efficiency and scalability, identifying areas for improvement and innovation.
- Develop and document technical standards, best practices, and user guides for tools and workflows.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to continuously improve our technical capabilities.
- Provide technical support and training to artists, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in Python programming, particularly within a VFX production environment.
- Solid understanding of C++ programming.
- Extensive experience with Maya API and/or Houdini HDK.
- Familiarity with shading languages (e.g., OSL, GLSL) and rendering technologies (e.g., Arnold, Redshift, V-Ray).
- Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems and shell scripting.
- Demonstrable problem-solving skills and ability to diagnose complex technical issues.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with production asset management systems (e.g., Shotgun/ShotGrid).
- Familiarity with real-time engines like Unreal Engine or Unity.
- Previous experience working in a large-scale VFX studio.
- Portfolio demonstrating technical contributions to film or episodic projects.
