Job Description

Join Island Heritage Carriage Tours as a Carriage / Horse-Drawn Tour Driver and become an integral part of our team, delivering unforgettable experiences to visitors in Parksville, BC. This unique tourism role requires a genuine love for animals, particularly horses, combined with excellent driving skills and a passion for storytelling. You will be responsible for safely operating horse-drawn carriages, caring for our majestic equine partners, and entertaining guests with engaging narratives about the area’s history and points of interest. Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate horse-drawn carriages along designated tour routes.
  • Provide expert care for horses, including feeding, grooming, saddling/harnessing, and monitoring their well-being.
  • Engage with guests, providing informative and entertaining commentary on local history, landmarks, and culture.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers throughout the tour.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of carriages and equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of carriages and stables.
  • Handle ticketing and basic transaction processes as required.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws and company safety protocols.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience working with and handling horses (e.g., grooming, harnessing, basic care).
  • Excellent driving skills and a clean driving record.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide engaging commentary and interact positively with diverse groups of people.
  • Physical ability to manage horses and carriage equipment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, during peak tourism season.
  • First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a tour guide or in a similar customer-facing role.
  • Knowledge of Parksville and Vancouver Island history, flora, and fauna.
  • Experience driving carriages or large vehicles.
  • Fluency in additional languages.
