Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Ship Master / Captain to command our commercial vessels, ensuring safe and efficient operations in challenging marine environments. This is a critical leadership role responsible for the overall navigation, management of the crew, cargo, and vessel integrity. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional maritime expertise, adherence to international maritime regulations, and a commitment to safety and environmental protection. Visa sponsorship is available for qualified international candidates who meet all Transport Canada and company requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assume full command of the vessel, its crew, and cargo, ensuring safe navigation and operation in all conditions.
  • Implement and enforce company policies, national and international maritime laws, and environmental regulations.
  • Oversee all aspects of vessel maintenance, equipment functionality, and safety systems.
  • Manage and supervise the deck and engine room crew, fostering a culture of teamwork, discipline, and continuous improvement.
  • Plan and execute voyages, including route planning, weather analysis, and adherence to schedules.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping, log entries, and reporting of incidents, accidents, or non-conformities.
  • Liaise with port authorities, clients, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth port calls and cargo operations.
  • Conduct regular safety drills and training for the crew to maintain emergency preparedness.
  • Maintain the vessel's certification and compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies.

Required Skills

  • Valid Master Mariner (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency or equivalent recognized by Transport Canada.
  • Minimum of 5 years (60 months) of experience as a Master on commercial vessels, preferably in coastal or deep-sea operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of international maritime regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW).
  • Proven leadership and communication skills, with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse crew.
  • Strong decision-making abilities, especially in high-pressure situations.
  • Excellent navigational skills and familiarity with modern electronic navigation systems.
  • Valid medical certificate (e.g., Marine Medical).
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with specific vessel types in the Seaspan fleet (e.g., tugs, barges, offshore supply vessels).
  • Additional certifications such as Advanced Fire Fighting, Medical First Aid Provider, Ship Security Officer.
  • Familiarity with operations in British Columbia coastal waters and the US Pacific Northwest.
  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies or a related field.
