Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Sign Language Interpreting Intern to join our team in Pensacola. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in a healthcare setting, supporting communication for deaf and hard-of-hearing patients and their families. Under the guidance of experienced interpreters, you will develop your ASL/BSL interpreting skills, learn about medical terminology, ethical considerations in healthcare interpreting, and the nuances of patient-provider communication. Key Responsibilities
- Observe certified sign language interpreters in various healthcare settings, including appointments, consultations, and emergency situations.
- Assist with administrative tasks related to interpreting services, such as scheduling and documentation.
- Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance ASL/BSL proficiency and interpreting skills.
- Practice interpreting exercises under supervision, receiving constructive feedback.
- Learn and adhere to professional ethics and standards for healthcare interpreters.
- Contribute to creating a welcoming and accessible environment for deaf and hard-of-hearing patients.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or British Sign Language (BSL) at an intermediate to advanced level.
- Strong desire to learn and develop professional interpreting skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines.
- Empathy, patience, and a commitment to patient-centered care.
- Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a Sign Language Interpreting program or related field.
