Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled A&E Nurse to join our dynamic Emergency Department team at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment where you will play a crucial role in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients presenting with a wide range of acute illnesses and injuries. You will be instrumental in providing compassionate, evidence-based care, ensuring timely interventions and contributing to positive patient outcomes within a supportive multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, history taking, and physical examinations.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualised care plans for patients presenting to the A&E department.
- Administer medications safely and accurately according to Trust policies and procedures.
- Respond effectively to emergency situations, including cardiac arrests and major traumas, demonstrating advanced clinical skills.
- Collaborate with medical staff, allied health professionals, and other nursing colleagues to ensure integrated patient care.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records, ensuring compliance with legal and professional standards.
- Provide clear and concise communication to patients and their families regarding their condition and treatment plan.
- Act as a patient advocate, ensuring dignity, respect, and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training opportunities to enhance clinical expertise.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe and clean clinical environment, adhering to infection control policies.
Required Skills
- Valid NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) registration as a Registered Nurse (Adult).
- Minimum of 2 years post-registration experience, preferably within an acute care setting.
- Proven ability to conduct comprehensive patient assessments and formulate care plans.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise and manage a diverse patient caseload efficiently.
- Sound knowledge of emergency nursing principles and practices.
- Competence in basic life support and advanced life support (or willingness to undertake).
- Strong team player with a commitment to collaborative working.
- Resilience and adaptability in a challenging and unpredictable environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience specifically within an Emergency Department or Urgent Care setting.
- Relevant post-registration courses or qualifications (e.g., ALS, PALS, TNCC).
- Mentorship qualification or experience in supporting student nurses.
- Experience with electronic patient record systems.
