Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled A&E Nurse to join our dynamic Emergency Department team at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment where you will play a crucial role in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients presenting with a wide range of acute illnesses and injuries. You will be instrumental in providing compassionate, evidence-based care, ensuring timely interventions and contributing to positive patient outcomes within a supportive multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, history taking, and physical examinations.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate individualised care plans for patients presenting to the A&E department.
• Administer medications safely and accurately according to Trust policies and procedures.
• Respond effectively to emergency situations, including cardiac arrests and major traumas, demonstrating advanced clinical skills.
• Collaborate with medical staff, allied health professionals, and other nursing colleagues to ensure integrated patient care.
• Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records, ensuring compliance with legal and professional standards.
• Provide clear and concise communication to patients and their families regarding their condition and treatment plan.
• Act as a patient advocate, ensuring dignity, respect, and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
• Participate in ongoing professional development and training opportunities to enhance clinical expertise.
• Contribute to maintaining a safe and clean clinical environment, adhering to infection control policies.

Required Skills

• Valid NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) registration as a Registered Nurse (Adult).
• Minimum of 2 years post-registration experience, preferably within an acute care setting.
• Proven ability to conduct comprehensive patient assessments and formulate care plans.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritise and manage a diverse patient caseload efficiently.
• Sound knowledge of emergency nursing principles and practices.
• Competence in basic life support and advanced life support (or willingness to undertake).
• Strong team player with a commitment to collaborative working.
• Resilience and adaptability in a challenging and unpredictable environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience specifically within an Emergency Department or Urgent Care setting.
• Relevant post-registration courses or qualifications (e.g., ALS, PALS, TNCC).
• Mentorship qualification or experience in supporting student nurses.
• Experience with electronic patient record systems.
