Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Shelter Assistant to join our team in a secure government-operated women and children’s shelter in Kilmarnock. This vital role involves providing direct support to residents, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment, and assisting with the daily operations of the shelter. The ideal candidate will be empathetic, resilient, and possess strong communication skills, committed to upholding the dignity and well-being of those seeking refuge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct emotional and practical support to residents, including women and children.
  • Assist with the daily management and smooth operation of the shelter, including intake procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized living environment for all residents.
  • Monitor the safety and security of the premises, reporting any concerns immediately.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as record-keeping, resident files, and activity logs.
  • Help organize and facilitate recreational and educational activities for residents.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, social workers, and other support professionals.
  • Ensure strict adherence to confidentiality protocols and shelter policies.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Basic administrative and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a support role, social care, or a similar environment (e.g., charity, community work).
  • Understanding of the issues faced by women and children experiencing domestic abuse or homelessness.
  • First Aid certification.
  • SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Social Services and Healthcare or equivalent.
