Job Description
Are you passionate about fostering understanding, promoting inclusivity, and advocating for the Deaf community? The Hearing & Speech Center of Fort Worth is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Deaf Culture & Advocacy Intern to join our team. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in community outreach, program development, and advocacy efforts centered around Deaf culture. You will work closely with experienced professionals, learning the nuances of effective advocacy, cultural sensitivity, and community engagement within a supportive environment. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals eager to make a tangible difference and build a foundation in social services and non-profit work.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in planning and executing community events and workshops promoting Deaf culture awareness.
- Conduct research on current advocacy issues impacting the Deaf community and present findings.
- Support the development of educational materials and resources for both Deaf and hearing audiences.
- Participate in team meetings, contributing ideas for outreach strategies and program improvements.
- Help manage communication channels, including social media, to share relevant information and resources.
- Engage with community members and stakeholders to understand needs and gather feedback.
- Provide administrative support to advocacy initiatives as needed.
- Learn and apply best practices in culturally sensitive communication and service delivery.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in Deaf culture, sign language, and advocacy
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Eagerness to learn and take initiative
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and social justice
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with American Sign Language (ASL) or willingness to learn
- Previous volunteer experience in a related field
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Social Work, Non-profit Management, Communications, Deaf Studies, or a related field
