Job Description
Are you passionate about supporting vulnerable individuals and making a tangible impact in your community? Surrey County Council is seeking a dedicated and empathetic Local Council Homeless Outreach Worker to join our team in Guildford. In this vital role, you will be on the front lines, engaging directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, providing immediate support, and helping them navigate pathways to stable housing and long-term solutions. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular outreach across Guildford and surrounding areas to identify and engage with individuals sleeping rough.
- Build trusting relationships with rough sleepers, assessing their immediate needs (food, shelter, medical attention) and providing compassionate support.
- Provide information, advice, and advocacy to individuals on housing options, welfare benefits, health services, and other support available.
- Collaborate with partner agencies, including housing providers, health services, mental health teams, and substance misuse services, to ensure comprehensive support.
- Assist individuals in accessing emergency accommodation, temporary housing, and long-term housing solutions.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of interactions, assessments, and interventions using designated systems.
- Respond to and de-escalate crisis situations with sensitivity and professionalism.
- Participate in multi-agency meetings to coordinate support plans and contribute to strategic initiatives for tackling homelessness.
- Advocate for service users, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected.
- Provide practical support, such as helping with appointments, form filling, and travel arrangements.
Required Skills

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a frontline support role, social care, community work, or volunteering with vulnerable populations.
- Knowledge of local housing pathways and support services in Surrey.
- A full UK driving license and access to a vehicle.
- Relevant qualification in social work, public services, community development, or a related field.
- Training in mental health first aid, safeguarding, or de-escalation techniques.
