Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Public Sculpture Conservator to join our Arts & Culture team. This pivotal role involves the preservation, restoration, and ongoing maintenance of the City’s valuable public sculpture collection. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the longevity and aesthetic integrity of our public art assets, performing hands-on conservation treatments, managing maintenance programs, and contributing to the cultural vibrancy of Mandurah.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive condition assessments of public sculptures and monuments.
  • Develop and implement appropriate conservation treatment proposals, adhering to ethical standards.
  • Perform hands-on cleaning, repair, stabilization, and restoration of sculptures made from various materials (e.g., metal, stone, wood, composites).
  • Establish and execute preventative conservation and maintenance programs.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of all conservation activities, including reports, photographic records, and treatment logs.
  • Advise on material specifications and installation methods for new public art acquisitions.
  • Collaborate with artists, fabricators, curators, and other stakeholders on conservation projects.
  • Manage project budgets and procurement for conservation materials and external services.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) regulations.
  • Engage with community and participate in public education initiatives related to art conservation.

Required Skills

  • Tertiary qualification (degree or diploma) in objects conservation, art conservation, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of practical experience in the conservation of outdoor sculptures or large-scale artworks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the properties, degradation mechanisms, and conservation treatments for a wide range of sculptural materials (e.g., bronze, stainless steel, stone, concrete, timber, painted surfaces).
  • Proficiency in conservation documentation, including condition reporting, treatment proposals, and photographic record-keeping.
  • Strong understanding of conservation ethics and best practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects concurrently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Australian Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Conservation.
  • Experience working within a local government or public cultural institution.
  • Experience with lifting equipment and working at heights.
  • Current First Aid certification.
  • Knowledge of local government processes and community engagement.
