Job Description

The Road Safety Coordinator will play a crucial role in advancing the Oregon Department of Transportation’s commitment to reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries on Oregon’s roads. This position involves supporting the development, implementation, and evaluation of various road safety programs and initiatives. The coordinator will assist in data analysis, community outreach, policy research, and project management to identify safety hazards, propose effective countermeasures, and promote safe driving behaviors. This is an on-site position based in Salem, Oregon, where you will collaborate closely with various internal departments and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of road safety data to identify trends, high-risk areas, and contributing factors to crashes.
  • Support the development and implementation of targeted road safety programs, campaigns, and educational materials for the public.
  • Coordinate with internal ODOT divisions, local governments, law enforcement, and community groups on joint safety initiatives.
  • Research and evaluate best practices in road safety from other states and national organizations.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and grant applications related to road safety projects and outcomes.
  • Help monitor program budgets and timelines to ensure projects are delivered efficiently and effectively.
  • Organize and attend public meetings, workshops, and events to gather input and disseminate information on safety initiatives.
  • Contribute to the review and updating of state road safety policies and standards.

Required Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly in data interpretation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Basic understanding of transportation safety principles or public health.
  • Valid Oregon Driver's License or ability to obtain one.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, Public Policy, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software for data mapping and analysis.
  • Familiarity with state or local government processes and regulations.
  • Experience in community engagement or public outreach.
  • Knowledge of federal and state road safety programs (e.g., Highway Safety Improvement Program).
