Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Boat Building Lead to join our dedicated team at Eastern Victoria Yacht Works. This pivotal role involves overseeing and actively participating in the construction and finishing of custom marine projects. The successful candidate will lead a team of skilled boat builders, ensuring all projects adhere to the highest standards of craftsmanship, safety, and efficiency. You will be instrumental in translating design specifications into tangible, high-quality vessels, working with diverse materials and advanced techniques. This is a stable, full-time on-site position offering the opportunity to contribute to some of Australia’s most exciting custom marine builds.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of boat builders and apprentices in daily operations.
- Oversee all stages of custom boat construction, from hull lay-up and structural fabrication to final fit-out and finishing.
- Ensure strict adherence to design specifications, quality standards, and project timelines.
- Perform hands-on boat building tasks, including lamination, composite work, marine carpentry, joinery, and detailed finishing.
- Conduct thorough quality control inspections at various production stages to maintain superior craftsmanship.
- Collaborate effectively with design engineers, project managers, and clients to ensure project success and client satisfaction.
- Implement and enforce rigorous safety protocols and best practices within the workshop environment.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and propose effective, innovative solutions during the build process.
- Manage material inventory, tool maintenance, and ensure efficient use of resources to minimize waste and optimize production.
- Provide regular progress updates to project management and identify potential delays or challenges.
Required Skills
- Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience in boat building or marine construction.
- Proven leadership and team supervision experience in a manufacturing or workshop setting.
- Expertise in various boat building materials, including advanced composites, timber, and aluminium.
- Proficiency in marine carpentry, joinery, lamination, and high-quality finishing techniques.
- Strong understanding of marine systems, naval architecture principles, and relevant industry regulations.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills to lead a team effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a fast-paced custom build environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Trade qualification or formal certification in boat building, marine construction, or a closely related field.
- Experience with CAD/CAM software for marine design, nesting, and fabrication processes.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies in a marine environment.
- Current First Aid and Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) certifications.
- Specialized experience with advanced composite construction techniques, vacuum bagging, or infusion.
