Are you passionate about bringing characters and objects to life in the digital realm? Deakin University’s dynamic digital media and creative arts team is seeking a motivated 3D Rigging & Technical Animation Intern to join our innovative projects. This internship offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment, working alongside experienced animators and technical artists. You will contribute to various university projects, from educational simulations to research visualizations, while developing a foundational understanding of rigging principles, animation pipelines, and real-time asset preparation. Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior artists in creating and refining 3D character and prop rigs.
- Learn and apply rigging principles, including joint placement, skinning, and control setup.
- Support the integration of rigged assets into various animation software and game engines.
- Participate in testing and debugging rigs to ensure functionality and performance.
- Contribute to the development of technical art tools and workflows under guidance.
- Collaborate with animators to ensure rigs meet animation requirements and provide feedback.
- Document rigging processes and technical specifications for project continuity.
- Stay updated with industry trends and software advancements in 3D rigging and technical animation.
Required Skills
- Basic understanding of 3D software (e.g., Maya, Blender, 3ds Max).
- Familiarity with fundamental anatomy and kinematics for characters.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and workflows.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Basic understanding of scripting (e.g., Python) is a plus, but not strictly required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Animation, Game Design, Digital Media, Computer Graphics, or a related field.
- Basic portfolio showcasing personal 3D work (e.g., rigs, models, simple animations).
- Experience with game engines (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine) is a bonus.
- Prior experience in a team-based project or academic group work.
