Job Description

Manulife Financial is seeking a highly motivated and analytical Actuarial Science & Mortality Modeling Intern to join our team in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the actuarial field, specifically focusing on mortality modeling within the life insurance sector. The intern will work alongside experienced actuaries and data scientists, contributing to real-world projects that impact business decisions and risk management strategies. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development, validation, and maintenance of mortality models.
  • Perform data analysis and statistical investigations to identify trends and patterns in mortality experience.
  • Support the actuarial team in preparing reports and presentations on mortality assumptions and results.
  • Contribute to ongoing research projects related to demographic and mortality trends.
  • Utilize actuarial software and programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Excel VBA) for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborate with various departments to achieve project goals.
  • Document processes, methodologies, and findings clearly and concisely.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related quantitative degree program.
  • Strong academic record, demonstrating proficiency in calculus, probability, and statistics.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt to new challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of at least one SOA/CAS actuarial exam.
  • Basic knowledge of actuarial concepts, particularly in life insurance.
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., R, Python, SAS) or programming languages.
  • Previous internship experience in a data-intensive or financial role.
