Job Description

The City of Chesapeake is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as an Animal Control Officer Trainee. This entry-level position provides comprehensive, on-the-job training, making it an ideal opportunity for those with no prior experience in animal control. You will work outdoors in various weather conditions, responding to calls, investigating incidents, and assisting animals in need. This role is crucial for maintaining public safety and ensuring the humane treatment of animals throughout Chesapeake.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to calls regarding stray, injured, or distressed animals and other animal-related complaints.
  • Investigate reports of animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment.
  • Humanely capture, restrain, and transport animals to the animal shelter.
  • Educate the public on city ordinances, responsible pet ownership, and animal welfare best practices.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports of daily activities, investigations, and animal dispositions.
  • Operate and maintain departmental vehicles and specialized animal control equipment.
  • Assist with public animal adoption events and outreach programs.
  • Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with established policies and procedures (full training provided).
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, public health officials, and other community partners.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work independently outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with the public, often in stressful situations.
  • Compassion and empathy for animals.
  • Physical ability to handle and restrain animals of varying sizes and temperaments, lift up to 50 lbs, and stand/walk for extended periods.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities.
  • No prior experience in animal control is required; full training will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some experience working or volunteering with animals.
  • Basic computer proficiency and experience with data entry.
  • Knowledge of animal breeds, behavior, and basic animal first aid.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply complex laws and regulations.
