Job Description
The Animal Shelter Intake Coordinator plays a crucial role in the initial assessment, documentation, and care planning for animals entering our shelter. This position requires a compassionate individual with strong organizational skills who can manage the intake process efficiently while ensuring the welfare and comfort of each animal. You will be the first point of contact for new arrivals, helping to gather critical information, conduct initial health assessments, and prepare animals for their stay at the shelter. This role is vital to our mission of providing a safe and nurturing environment for all animals awaiting their forever homes.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the intake process for all incoming animals, including owner surrenders, strays, and transfers.
- Conduct initial behavioral and health assessments upon arrival, documenting findings accurately.
- Input detailed animal profiles, medical histories, and intake paperwork into the shelter management system.
- Communicate sensitively and effectively with individuals surrendering animals, providing resources and support as needed.
- Coordinate initial veterinary care, vaccinations, and microchipping for newly admitted animals.
- Assist with the proper housing and comfortable settling of new animals into their designated areas.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all animals in the shelter database.
- Collaborate with veterinary staff, animal care technicians, and adoption counselors to ensure seamless transitions for animals.
- Answer inquiries from the public regarding intake policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all shelter policies, procedures, and local regulations.
Required Skills
- Minimum 1 year of experience in animal care, veterinary, or shelter environment.
- Demonstrated compassion and respect for animals.
- Excellent organizational and data entry skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to handle animals safely and calmly, including those who may be stressed or fearful.
- Proficiency with computer systems and data management software.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in animal science, biology, or related field.
- Experience with shelter management software (e.g., Chameleon, PetPoint).
- Knowledge of common animal health issues and basic first aid.
- Prior experience in customer service or public relations.
