Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Archaeologist / Heritage Manager to join our dynamic team in Detroit, Michigan. This is a unique opportunity to lead and contribute to significant cultural resource management (CRM) projects across the region, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The successful candidate will manage all phases of archaeological investigations, from initial surveys to mitigation and monitoring, for a diverse portfolio of infrastructure, environmental, and development projects. This role involves significant client interaction, regulatory agency coordination, and mentorship of junior staff. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all aspects of archaeological field investigations, including pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, excavation, and artifact analysis.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, cultural resource management plans, and other project documentation in accordance with NHPA, NEPA, and state historic preservation office (SHPO) guidelines.
  • Serve as primary liaison with clients, regulatory agencies (e.g., SHPO, tribal nations), and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage project budgets, schedules, and scopes of work to ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery.
  • Conduct archival research, background studies, and site evaluations to assess potential impacts to cultural resources.
  • Mentor and supervise junior archaeologists and field technicians, providing guidance on fieldwork techniques, data recording, and report writing.
  • Assist in business development activities, including proposal writing and client outreach.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in cultural resource management (CRM) archaeology, including fieldwork and report writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in Section 106 and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) compliance.
  • Strong understanding of archaeological methods, laboratory procedures, and artifact analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with GIS applications.
  • Ability to travel for fieldwork, sometimes to remote locations, and work effectively in varying weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with Michigan or Great Lakes region archaeological sites and regulations.
  • Experience managing large-scale CRM projects.
  • Record of successful project completion and client satisfaction.
  • PMP (Project Management Professional) certification or equivalent experience.
  • Active involvement in professional archaeological organizations.
