Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable International Student Advisor to join our dynamic team. This role is crucial in providing comprehensive guidance and support to our international student population, ensuring their compliance with immigration regulations while fostering their academic and personal success. The successful candidate will navigate complex immigration policies, advise students on cultural adjustment, and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive campus environment. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise international students on complex U.S. immigration regulations (F-1 and J-1 visas) for maintaining legal status, including enrollment requirements, employment eligibility, travel, and extensions.
  • Process and review immigration documents such as I-20s and DS-2019s, ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal regulations.
  • Conduct workshops and informational sessions on immigration topics, cultural adjustment, and campus resources.
  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), representing the university in communication with government agencies.
  • Collaborate with various university departments (admissions, registrar, student life) to advocate for international student needs.
  • Respond to student inquiries via email, phone, and in-person appointments regarding immigration, academic, and personal concerns.
  • Maintain accurate student records in immigration databases and university systems.
  • Stay current with evolving immigration laws and regulations relevant to international students and scholars.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., International Relations, Education, Counseling, Public Administration).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with international students or in a similar advising role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of F-1 and J-1 visa regulations and SEVIS database.
  • Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural communication, and advising skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex federal regulations accurately.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
  • Fluency in a second language.
  • Experience living or studying abroad.
  • Familiarity with the University of Washington's academic and administrative structure.
