Job Description

The Blind & Visually Impaired Support Services Intern will gain hands-on experience in supporting individuals living with sight loss. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful programs and services, learning directly from experienced professionals in the field. The intern will assist in facilitating activities, providing practical support, and contributing to the overall well-being and independence of our clients in the Sydney area. Full training and mentorship will be provided, ensuring a valuable learning experience for an aspiring professional.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist staff in planning and facilitating recreational and educational activities for clients.
  • Provide one-on-one practical support to clients as needed, under supervision (e.g., guiding, reading mail).
  • Help with administrative tasks related to program delivery and client records.
  • Contribute to the development of accessible materials and resources.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Engage with clients in a respectful, empathetic, and person-centered manner.

Required Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Empathy and a genuine desire to help others.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team.
  • Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a proactive attitude.
  • No prior experience required; willingness to learn is paramount.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant program (e.g., Social Work, Disability Studies, Recreation Therapy, Education).
  • Experience volunteering or working in a support role, particularly with vulnerable populations.
  • Knowledge of accessibility principles or assistive technologies.
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
