Job Description

The City of Nanaimo, Parks and Recreation Department, is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic City Arborist Assistant / Tree Surgeon Trainee to join our dedicated team. This is an entry-level opportunity designed for individuals with little to no prior experience in arboriculture. We provide comprehensive on-the-job training, mentorship from certified arborists, and the chance to develop specialized skills in tree care and urban forestry. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist certified arborists and tree care specialists in all aspects of tree maintenance, including pruning, removal, and planting.
  • Learn and practice safe operation of tools and equipment, such as chainsaws, chippers, and aerial lifts, under direct supervision.
  • Perform ground support duties, including brush clearing, dragging limbs, and site cleanup.
  • Assist with the inspection and assessment of trees for health and safety concerns.
  • Help maintain and organize tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Participate in emergency tree response as needed.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong work ethic and a positive, team-oriented attitude.
  • Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced professionals.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and adhere to safety guidelines.
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver's License or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of hand tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in outdoor labor, landscaping, or construction.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Demonstrated interest in trees, forestry, or environmental stewardship.
  • Mechanical aptitude for equipment maintenance.
