Job Description
Barton Malow Company is seeking experienced and safety-conscious Commercial Divers / Welders to join our specialized marine and heavy civil construction teams. This is a unique opportunity for skilled professionals to contribute to challenging underwater projects including infrastructure repair, inspection, and new construction. We are particularly interested in candidates who may require sponsorship, demonstrating our commitment to a diverse and globally sourced talent pool. The successful candidate will perform a variety of underwater tasks requiring precision welding, cutting, inspection, and maintenance using specialized diving and welding equipment. This is an on-site position requiring deployment to various project locations, predominantly within the Great Lakes region and surrounding areas. Full commitment to safety protocols and high-quality workmanship is paramount.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform underwater welding (wet and dry) and cutting operations on various materials and structures.
- Conduct underwater inspections, surveys, and maintenance tasks on pipelines, foundations, dams, and marine structures.
- Operate and maintain specialized diving equipment, welding tools, and underwater power tools.
- Participate in rigging and lifting operations of underwater components.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, company policies, and dive procedures.
- Communicate effectively with dive tenders, supervisors, and other team members.
- Document daily work activities, observations, and equipment status.
- Participate in pre-dive planning and post-dive debriefing sessions.
- Assist with surface support tasks as required.
Required Skills
- ADCI (Association of Diving Contractors International) Commercial Diver Certification or equivalent
- Certified Welder (e.g., AWS D3.6M Underwater Welding Code or equivalent) with demonstrable experience in various welding processes (SMAW, FCAW, etc.)
- Minimum of 2 years of proven experience as a Commercial Diver / Welder in marine construction or related fields
- Strong swimming abilities and physical fitness for demanding underwater work
- Excellent problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude
- Ability to work effectively in challenging and confined underwater environments
- Adherence to strict safety protocols and procedures
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced welding certifications (e.g., pressure vessel welding)
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) certifications (UT, MT, PT) for underwater inspections
- Experience with hyperbaric welding techniques
- HAZWOPER certification
- Experience operating underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs)
