Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Consultant Cardiologist to join our dynamic cardiology team based primarily at Watford General Hospital. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering comprehensive cardiac services, including outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, and diagnostic investigations. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a forward-thinking department committed to clinical excellence, teaching, and research. You will be instrumental in the management of complex cardiac conditions, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert cardiology consultations and management for both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Perform and interpret a range of diagnostic procedures, including echocardiography, stress tests, and cardiac monitoring.
  • Lead and participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, and case conferences.
  • Contribute to the on-call rota for cardiology, ensuring timely and effective care for acute cardiac emergencies.
  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, including registrars, fellows, and core trainees.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in teaching and training of medical students and other healthcare professionals.
  • Undertake continuing professional development (CPD) activities to maintain and enhance clinical expertise.

Required Skills

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practice.
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Cardiology (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview).
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
  • Extensive experience in general cardiology, including acute and chronic cardiac conditions.
  • Proficiency in transthoracic echocardiography.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team-working skills.
  • Ability to manage a busy clinical workload efficiently and effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a sub-specialty of cardiology such as interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, heart failure, or cardiac imaging.
  • Higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD) in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrable experience in clinical research or audit.
  • Experience in transoesophageal echocardiography or other advanced imaging modalities.
