Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Critical Care Nurse to join our dynamic and dedicated team within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. As a Critical Care Nurse, you will provide expert nursing care to critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and life support in a fast-paced and challenging environment. This role demands exceptional clinical expertise, critical thinking, and a compassionate approach to patient and family care. You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive and specialized nursing care to critically ill patients, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
- Monitor and interpret complex physiological data from advanced life support systems, making timely and appropriate interventions.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments, including advanced intravenous therapies, infusions, and titrations.
- Operate and manage sophisticated medical equipment such as ventilators, cardiac monitors, haemofiltration machines, and other critical care devices.
- Collaborate effectively with medical staff, allied health professionals, and patient families to ensure holistic patient care.
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and up-to-date patient records in compliance with NMC guidelines and hospital policies.
- Act as a patient advocate, upholding patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
- Participate actively in ward rounds, handover sessions, and contribute to the development of individualized care plans.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to junior nursing staff and students, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
Required Skills
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
- Minimum of 2 years post-registration experience in an acute care setting, ideally with some exposure to critical care.
- Demonstrable ability to conduct comprehensive patient assessments and make sound clinical decisions.
- Proficiency in medication administration and management of medical devices.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective under pressure.
- Strong organizational and time management capabilities.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-registration qualification in Critical Care Nursing (e.g., Post-Graduate Diploma/Certificate).
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) or equivalent certification.
- Experience with specific critical care technologies such as ECMO or CRRT.
- Evidence of leadership potential or experience in mentoring junior staff.
