Job Description
The Devonport City Council is seeking a dedicated and experienced Emergency Management Officer to play a critical role in enhancing our community’s resilience and preparedness. This vital position involves the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive emergency management plans and strategies to protect life, property, and the environment within the Devonport municipal area. The successful candidate will work closely with internal departments, external agencies, and community groups to ensure effective response and recovery operations during emergencies. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to the safety and well-being of the Devonport community.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, review, and update Council's emergency management plans, procedures, and policies.
- Coordinate and facilitate emergency management training and exercises for Council staff and relevant stakeholders.
- Act as a key liaison with Tasmania Fire Service, Tasmania Police, SES, and other emergency services agencies.
- Support the activation and operation of Council's Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) during incidents.
- Conduct risk assessments and identify vulnerabilities within the community related to various hazards.
- Promote community awareness and preparedness programs for emergencies.
- Prepare reports and presentations on emergency management activities and outcomes.
- Participate in regional and state-level emergency management forums and working groups.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience in emergency management, disaster response, or a related field.
- Sound knowledge of relevant emergency management legislation, frameworks, and best practices.
- Proven ability to develop, implement, and review emergency plans.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
- Current Tasmanian driver's license.
- Ability to work outside of normal business hours during emergencies or exercises.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal qualifications in Emergency Management, Public Safety, or a related discipline.
- Experience working within a local government environment.
- Knowledge of the Devonport area and its specific emergency management challenges.
- Experience in conducting training and community engagement activities.
