Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Genetic Counselor (Assistant) to join our Medical Genetics team at Dandenong. This role is integral to supporting our Genetic Counselors in providing exceptional care to patients and their families. You will assist with various clinical and administrative tasks, ensuring the smooth operation of our genetics services. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a vital area of healthcare, working alongside experienced professionals in a dynamic hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Genetic Counselors with patient appointments, including preparing charts and gathering relevant medical history.
  • Coordinate genetic testing logistics, including sample collection, processing, and dispatch to laboratories.
  • Provide administrative support such as scheduling appointments, managing referrals, and maintaining accurate patient records.
  • Communicate with patients and families to provide general information and confirm appointments under supervision.
  • Help maintain and organize patient educational materials and resource libraries.
  • Ensure strict adherence to patient confidentiality and privacy protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to optimize patient care pathways.

Required Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in using medical record systems and general office software.
  • Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and sensitivity when interacting with patients and families.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Fundamental understanding of medical terminology and healthcare processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate III or IV in Allied Health Assistance, Medical Administration, or a related field.
  • Previous experience (at least 1 year) in a clinical or healthcare administrative setting, preferably within genetics or a specialist medical practice.
  • Basic knowledge of genetic conditions, inheritance patterns, and genetic testing methodologies.
  • Experience working within a large public health service.
