Job Description
Join Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind as a Guide Dog Training Assistant and embark on a truly rewarding career. You will play a crucial role in the development and care of our future guide dogs, assisting our certified instructors in all aspects of the training program. Key Responsibilities
- Assist certified guide dog instructors with daily training sessions for dogs, focusing on obedience, guiding techniques, and socialization.
- Participate in the care and well-being of dogs in training, including feeding, grooming, exercise, and maintaining kennel cleanliness.
- Monitor and record dog behavior and progress, reporting observations to senior trainers.
- Help prepare training areas and equipment, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment.
- Support the health and hygiene protocols for all dogs, under veterinary guidance.
- Engage in continuous learning and professional development provided by the organization.
- Adhere to all animal welfare standards and organizational policies and procedures.
- Assist with public demonstrations and educational events as needed.
Required Skills
- Genuine passion for animals and their welfare, especially dogs.
- Strong work ethic and a proactive, eager-to-learn attitude.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively in a team.
- Physical stamina to handle large dogs and perform tasks involving walking, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and standing for extended periods.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong sense of responsibility.
- Patience and compassion when working with animals.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous volunteer experience with animals or in a non-profit setting.
- Basic understanding of canine behavior or animal care.
- Valid G-class driver's license with a clean driving record (for potential transport needs).
