Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and respectful Historic Monument Caretaker to join our dedicated team. This quiet public sector role involves the careful maintenance and presentation of Chichester’s valuable historic assets, including ancient structures, monuments, and their surrounding grounds. The ideal candidate will possess a keen eye for detail, a strong work ethic, and a deep respect for historical preservation. This is an on-site position within the heart of our historic city, offering a stable and rewarding career path in local government.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular inspections of assigned historic monuments and their immediate surroundings to identify maintenance needs.
- Perform general cleaning, litter removal, and upkeep of monument sites and adjacent public areas.
- Carry out minor repairs and preventative maintenance tasks on historical structures under supervision.
- Monitor for vandalism, damage, or unauthorized activities, reporting incidents promptly to management.
- Assist with groundskeeping duties around monuments, including light gardening and pathway maintenance.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and material usage.
- Liaise respectfully with the public, answering basic queries about the sites when appropriate.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations, particularly when working in sensitive historical environments.
- Support scheduled conservation projects and public events at monument locations.
