Job Description

Join the ACLU of Indiana as a Human Rights Watch & Advocacy Intern, focusing on policy research and development. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to significant civil liberties issues by assisting our legal and policy teams. You will gain hands-on experience in public policy advocacy, research, and community engagement, all while working in a dynamic non-profit environment dedicated to justice and equality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on various civil liberties and human rights issues, including legislative proposals and current events.
  • Assist in drafting policy briefs, memos, reports, and public education materials.
  • Monitor legislative developments at the state and local levels relevant to ACLU’s policy agenda.
  • Support advocacy campaigns through data collection and analysis.
  • Attend legislative hearings, coalition meetings, and community events as a representative of the ACLU of Indiana.
  • Collaborate with legal and communications teams to ensure consistent messaging and strategy.
  • Assist with administrative tasks as needed to support the policy department.

Required Skills

  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in civil liberties, human rights, and social justice.
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., Political Science, Law, Public Policy, Sociology, Human Rights).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Indiana's legislative process.
  • Experience with database management or basic data analysis.
  • Prior volunteer or internship experience in advocacy, non-profit, or legal settings.
  • Ability to commit to at least 15-20 hours per week.
