Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Intellectual Property (IP) Attorney to join our dynamic team in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced professional looking to advance their career in a vibrant legal environment, with visa sponsorship available for qualified international candidates. The successful candidate will be instrumental in advising clients on a broad range of IP matters, including patent, trademark, copyright, and industrial design prosecution, litigation, and strategic portfolio management. You will work closely with innovators, businesses, and legal teams to protect and leverage intellectual assets, contributing directly to their success and growth. This position demands a strong understanding of IP law, exceptional analytical abilities, and a commitment to delivering superior client service. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and prosecute patent, trademark, and industrial design applications before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) and internationally.
  • Provide strategic advice on IP portfolio development, protection, and enforcement.
  • Conduct IP due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and licensing agreements.
  • Draft and negotiate IP-related agreements, including licenses, assignments, and confidentiality agreements.
  • Advise clients on copyright matters, including registration, ownership, and infringement.
  • Represent clients in IP litigation, including infringement actions, opposition proceedings, and appeals.
  • Stay abreast of developments in IP law and practice, providing proactive advice to clients.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across different practice areas to deliver integrated legal solutions.

Required Skills

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Membership in good standing with a Canadian provincial bar (or eligibility for immediate admission).
  • Registered Patent Agent and/or Trademark Agent in Canada, or eligibility for registration.
  • Minimum 3 years of post-call experience practicing IP law.
  • Demonstrated experience in IP prosecution (patent/trademark) and/or litigation.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical background or degree in engineering, computer science, life sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience with international IP filings (e.g., PCT, Madrid Protocol).
  • Exposure to IP strategy development and commercialization.
  • Proficiency in French or other languages.
