Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and community-focused Library Service Assistant to join our dedicated team at the Broome Public Library. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a passion for customer service and a desire to contribute to the local community. As a Library Service Assistant, you will be the welcoming face of our local council hub, providing essential support to library users, assisting with daily operations, and contributing to the positive atmosphere of our community space. No prior library experience is required, as full training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service at the library's front desk, assisting patrons with enquiries, memberships, and resource access.
  • Assist patrons with locating books, digital resources, and using library technology.
  • Process new library materials, including cataloguing, covering, and shelving items accurately.
  • Organise and maintain the library collection, ensuring shelves are tidy and materials are in correct order.
  • Support the delivery of library programs and events for various age groups, including setup and pack-down.
  • Handle borrowing, returns, and reservations using the library management system.
  • Assist with basic administrative tasks and maintain library statistics.
  • Promote library services, resources, and community initiatives.
  • Ensure the library environment is welcoming, safe, and accessible for all users.

Required Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service orientation and interpersonal abilities.
  • Basic computer literacy and comfort with learning new software.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • A proactive and positive attitude with a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to perform moderate physical tasks, including lifting and shelving books.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a customer service role, retail, or a public-facing environment.
  • Familiarity with the Broome community and its diverse demographics.
  • Experience with library management systems (e.g., Spydus) is an advantage, but not essential.
  • A current Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain one).
