Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Livestock Health Officer to join our team, serving the vital rural services sector in Ulverstone, Tasmania. This role involves critical work in promoting animal health, preventing disease outbreaks, and providing expert advice to livestock producers. You will be instrumental in safeguarding the health of livestock populations and contributing to the economic stability of regional agriculture. This position requires regular field work, direct interaction with farmers, and a commitment to upholding high standards of animal welfare and biosecurity.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular inspections and assessments of livestock health on farms.
- Monitor for signs of disease, advise on preventative measures, and assist with outbreak management.
- Provide expert advice and training to farmers on best practices in animal husbandry, nutrition, and welfare.
- Collect samples for diagnostic testing and interpret results to inform health strategies.
- Maintain accurate records of all inspections, treatments, and recommendations.
- Ensure compliance with relevant biosecurity regulations and animal health policies.
- Collaborate with government agencies, veterinarians, and industry stakeholders.
- Participate in community outreach and educational programs related to livestock health.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of livestock health, diseases, and biosecurity protocols.
- Practical experience in handling and assessing various types of livestock.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with farmers.
- Excellent observational and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a field-based environment.
- Proficiency in record-keeping and basic computer applications.
- Current Australian Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree or diploma in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Agricultural Science, or a related field.
- Previous experience in a rural services role, veterinary support, or livestock management.
- Knowledge of Tasmanian agricultural practices and specific regional challenges.
- Relevant certifications in animal first aid or specific livestock health areas.
