Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Master Mariner to take command of our vessels operating within the Port of Swansea and its approaches. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient navigation, operation, and management of the vessel, its crew, and cargo. This pivotal role demands exceptional leadership, strategic decision-making, and an unwavering commitment to maritime safety regulations and environmental protection. You will ensure full compliance with international and national maritime laws, company policies, and best practices, maintaining the highest standards of operational readiness and crew welfare.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the ultimate authority on board the vessel, responsible for the safety of the vessel, crew, cargo, and environment.
- Oversee and direct all aspects of vessel navigation, manoeuvring, berthing, and unberthing operations within the port area and designated waterways.
- Ensure strict adherence to all relevant national and international maritime regulations, including SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, and local port bye-laws.
- Manage and supervise the vessel's crew, fostering a culture of teamwork, discipline, and continuous professional development.
- Implement and enforce company safety management systems, conducting regular drills and ensuring crew proficiency in emergency procedures.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, records, and reports pertaining to vessel operations, safety, maintenance, and personnel.
- Liaise effectively with port authorities, pilots, tug masters, agents, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth and efficient port calls.
- Monitor and manage the vessel's operational budget, ensuring cost-effective maintenance and supply chain management.
- Conduct regular inspections of the vessel and equipment to ensure seaworthiness and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Provide leadership in environmental protection, ensuring all operations minimise impact on marine ecosystems.
Required Skills
- Unlimited Master's Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2) or equivalent.
- Extensive command experience as Master Mariner on commercial vessels.
- Thorough knowledge of international and national maritime regulations and codes.
- Proven leadership, management, and communication skills.
- Excellent decision-making abilities under pressure.
- Strong commitment to safety and environmental protection.
- Proficiency in navigation, ship handling, and port operations.
- Ability to lead, mentor, and develop a diverse crew.
- Sound understanding of vessel maintenance and emergency procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in port operations or harbour craft command.
- Advanced training in Bridge Resource Management (BRM) and Human Element Leadership and Management (HELM).
- Additional endorsements for specific vessel types or operations relevant to port work.
- Degree in Maritime Studies or related field.
- Proficiency in IT systems for vessel management and reporting.
