Job Description
Indiana State University is seeking a passionate and driven Meteorology & Climate Science Intern to join our campus weather station team. This internship offers a unique opportunity for students to gain practical, hands-on experience in meteorological observation, data collection, and basic analysis. Working closely with faculty and researchers, the intern will contribute to ongoing projects that monitor local weather patterns and support broader climate research initiatives, developing foundational skills essential for a career in atmospheric science.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the collection and recording of meteorological data from various instruments, including temperature, humidity, wind speed/direction, and precipitation.
- Operate and monitor automated and manual weather station equipment, ensuring accurate readings and proper functionality.
- Perform initial quality checks on collected data, identifying and flagging any anomalies or errors.
- Support faculty and graduate students in ongoing research projects, which may include data entry, basic statistical analysis, or literature reviews.
- Participate in the routine maintenance and calibration of weather station sensors and other equipment.
- Learn about the principles of atmospheric observation and instrument calibration.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Geography, or a related field.
- Demonstrated strong interest and enthusiasm for meteorology, climate science, and environmental data.
- Basic proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various outdoor weather conditions.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data recording.
- Strong work ethic and a proactive approach to learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous coursework or projects related to atmospheric science or climatology.
- Familiarity with basic data analysis concepts or software (e.g., spreadsheet functions, introductory programming).
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
