Job Description
The Durham District School Board is seeking a passionate and inspiring Music Director / Band Teacher to lead our vibrant music program. This full-time, on-site position involves developing and implementing comprehensive music curricula, directing school bands, and fostering a love for music in students from various age groups. The successful candidate will be a dynamic educator dedicated to providing high-quality instrumental music instruction and performance opportunities. We are open to candidates requiring Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) and are committed to supporting international applicants through the immigration process.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver engaging instrumental music lessons to students of varying skill levels.
- Direct and rehearse school bands, preparing them for performances, competitions, and community events.
- Select appropriate repertoire that challenges and inspires students while aligning with curriculum goals.
- Organize and manage all aspects of band performances, including logistics, scheduling, and promotion.
- Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to support their musical development.
- Collaborate with other educators and staff to integrate music into the broader school community.
- Maintain and manage musical instruments, equipment, and a well-organized music room.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school administration regarding program activities and student achievement.
- Contribute to the school's extra-curricular program.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or a related field.
- Valid Ontario teaching certification (or eligibility to obtain it).
- Demonstrated proficiency in multiple band instruments, with a primary focus on wind and percussion.
- Proven ability to conduct and lead instrumental ensembles effectively.
- Strong understanding of music theory, pedagogy, and curriculum development.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to inspire and motivate students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Music, Music Education, or conducting.
- Experience directing various types of instrumental ensembles (e.g., concert band, jazz band).
- Experience with music technology and digital audio workstations.
- Familiarity with the Ontario curriculum for the arts.
- Previous experience working in a school board setting.
