Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Oceanographer or Marine Biologist to join our research team in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge marine science initiatives that directly inform policy and conservation efforts. The successful candidate will participate in diverse projects ranging from ecosystem monitoring to impact assessments. Key Responsibilities
- Conducting fieldwork, including participation in research cruises and coastal surveys
- Analyzing oceanographic and biological data using various statistical and computational tools
- Developing and implementing research protocols for marine ecosystem studies
- Preparing scientific reports, publications, and presentations for internal and external audiences
- Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, including other scientists, technicians, and policy makers
- Operating and maintaining specialized scientific equipment and instrumentation
- Contributing to environmental impact assessments and conservation planning efforts
- Mentoring junior staff or students as opportunities arise
Required Skills
- Ph.D. or Master's degree in Oceanography, Marine Biology, Biological Oceanography, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience in marine science research and data collection
- Proficiency in statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, MATLAB) and geographic information systems (GIS)
- Strong understanding of marine ecosystems, oceanographic processes, and relevant biological principles
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Physical ability to participate in fieldwork, including potentially adverse weather conditions and at-sea operations
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with specific oceanographic instruments (CTDs, ADCPs, gliders) or biological sampling gear (trawls, nets)
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or MATLAB for data processing
- Experience in a regulatory or government research environment
- SCUBA diving certification (e.g., AAUS, PADI Scientific Diver)
- Knowledge of Canadian marine legislation and policy
