Job Description

The City of Fredericksburg Public Works Department is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an Entry-Level Public Facilities Handyman / Maintenance worker. Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior maintenance staff with routine repairs and preventative maintenance tasks across various public facilities.
- Perform basic plumbing tasks such as unclogging drains, repairing leaky faucets, and assisting with fixture installations.
- Execute minor carpentry work including patching drywall, repairing doors, and replacing damaged trim.
- Undertake general painting projects, touch-ups, and surface preparation.
- Conduct basic electrical tasks like replacing light bulbs, ballasts, and troubleshooting simple electrical issues under supervision.
- Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Respond to maintenance requests in a timely and efficient manner.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and departmental procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
- Assist with groundskeeping and cleanup of public areas as needed.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED.
- Strong desire to learn and develop trade skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of safety practices or willingness to learn.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand, walk, bend, and climb ladders for extended periods.
- Valid Virginia Driver's License or ability to obtain one within a probationary period.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Any prior experience, even volunteer or personal, with basic home repairs or maintenance.
- Familiarity with various hand and power tools.
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification (or willingness to obtain).
