Job Description
We are seeking a vigilant and professional Public Transit Security Officer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment across YRT properties, vehicles, and transit facilities in Markham. This position requires shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and comes with a comprehensive benefits package. You will play a crucial role in ensuring passenger safety, deterring criminal activity, responding to incidents, and providing assistance and information to the public.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular patrols of transit vehicles, stations, and property to ensure safety and security.
- Respond promptly to alarms, emergency calls, and security incidents, taking appropriate action.
- Monitor surveillance equipment and access control systems.
- Enforce YRT policies and procedures, as well as relevant municipal bylaws and provincial regulations.
- Provide assistance and information to passengers and YRT staff in a professional and courteous manner.
- De-escalate conflicts and resolve disputes effectively and safely.
- Prepare detailed and accurate reports on incidents, observations, and daily activities.
- Liaise with emergency services, including police, fire, and ambulance, when necessary.
- Assist in emergency evacuations and crowd control during special events or disruptions.
Required Skills
- Valid Ontario Security Guard License.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong observational and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and handle critical incidents.
- Proficiency in written English for report writing.
- Physical capability to perform duties, including prolonged standing, walking, and occasional lifting.
- Valid G Class Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in public transit security, law enforcement, or a similar security role.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation pertaining to public transit and security.
- Proficiency in additional languages.
