Job Description
We are seeking a highly organized, calm under pressure, and customer-focused Public Works Dispatcher to join our dynamic team. This fast-paced role is critical to the efficient operation of our Public Works Department, serving as the central hub for incoming service requests and emergency calls. The successful candidate will be responsible for receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching crews for various maintenance and repair tasks across the city. You will play a vital role in ensuring public safety and the swift resolution of infrastructure issues, requiring excellent communication skills and the ability to multitask effectively in a demanding environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and prioritize incoming service requests and emergency calls via phone, radio, and digital systems.
- Dispatch appropriate Public Works crews (e.g., Water, Wastewater, Streets, Solid Waste) to various locations.
- Maintain accurate records of calls, dispatches, crew activities, and incident reports.
- Monitor crew locations and statuses using GPS and other tracking systems.
- Communicate effectively with field personnel, supervisors, and other city departments.
- Provide exceptional customer service to residents, addressing inquiries and concerns with professionalism.
- Coordinate with emergency services during critical incidents and natural disasters.
- Input and retrieve data from computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and work order management systems.
- Stay informed about city geography, street names, and common public works issues.
Required Skills

- Ability to remain calm and focused during high-stress situations.
- Basic computer literacy and ability to learn new software quickly.
- Geographical familiarity with the Plano area or ability to quickly learn.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in dispatching (e.g., public safety, emergency services, transportation, or public works).
- Experience with Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Familiarity with work order management software.
- Certification in NIMS/ICS (National Incident Management System/Incident Command System).
