Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Refugee Liaison Support officer to join our team in Glenorchy. This vital public sector role involves providing direct support and guidance to refugees and asylum seekers, helping them navigate various services and integrate successfully into Tasmanian society. You will act as a primary point of contact, offering practical assistance, information, and advocacy while working closely with community organizations and government agencies. This role requires strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to making a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide culturally sensitive support and information to refugees and asylum seekers regarding available services (housing, health, education, employment).
- Assist clients with administrative tasks, including form completion and appointment scheduling.
- Liaise effectively with government departments, NGOs, and community groups to coordinate support services.
- Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure their needs are met and their rights are upheld.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records in accordance with departmental guidelines.
- Participate in community outreach activities to build trust and inform refugee communities about support programs.
- Identify and report any safeguarding concerns or risks to relevant authorities.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of support programs for refugee communities.
Required Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse individuals.
- Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and an understanding of the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for managing client cases and administrative tasks.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Proficiency in basic office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- A valid Australian driver's license and access to reliable transport for client visits.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a support, liaison, or community development role within the public sector or a non-profit organization.
- Tertiary qualification in social work, community services, international relations, or a related field.
- Fluency in a language commonly spoken by refugee communities in Tasmania (e.g., Arabic, Dari, Karen, Swahili).
- Knowledge of Australian immigration policies and refugee settlement frameworks.
