Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate School Counselor / Guidance Counselor to join our team and provide essential support services to students across our district. This crucial role involves guiding students through academic, career, and personal development, ensuring their well-being and success within the school environment. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with educators, parents, and community partners to create a nurturing and challenging educational experience. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling to students on academic, career, and social-emotional issues.
  • Develop and implement guidance programs and workshops to address student needs and promote holistic development.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student learning and resolve challenges.
  • Assist students with post-secondary planning, including university/college applications, scholarship searches, and career exploration.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution and mediation among students when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with board policies and provincial regulations.
  • Refer students and families to appropriate community resources and support services.
  • Participate in school-wide initiatives and committees focused on student well-being and success.
  • Stay current with best practices in school counseling and relevant educational legislation.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Guidance, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Valid certification or eligibility for certification as a School Counselor/Guidance Counselor in Ontario (e.g., Ontario College of Teachers qualification in Guidance and Career Education).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a counseling or guidance role, preferably within an educational setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, including those with special needs.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in crisis intervention and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Knowledge of post-secondary pathways and career development resources.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with student information systems and educational technology.
  • Familiarity with the Algoma District community and local resources.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
