Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and versatile School Grounds Caretaker / Handyman to join our team, ensuring our school premises are safe, clean, and well-maintained. This role offers term-time options, making it ideal for individuals seeking work schedules aligned with the academic year. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to groundskeeping, minor repairs, and general facility upkeep. This is a vital role in supporting the daily operations of our schools and providing a conducive environment for learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general grounds maintenance including lawn mowing, trimming, weeding, and leaf removal.
  • Undertake minor repairs and maintenance tasks within school buildings (e.g., painting, basic plumbing, carpentry, light fixture replacement).
  • Monitor and maintain school grounds for safety hazards, reporting major issues to management.
  • Assist with seasonal tasks such as snow removal and salting pathways during winter months.
  • Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure outdoor recreational areas and equipment are clean and in good working order.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown for school events and activities.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and policies.
  • Communicate effectively with school staff and administration regarding maintenance needs.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in groundskeeping or general maintenance work (minimum 1 year).
  • Proficiency in operating grounds maintenance equipment (mowers, trimmers, snowblowers).
  • Basic knowledge of minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to identifying maintenance needs.
  • Valid Class 5 Nova Scotia Driver's License and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification in a trades-related field (e.g., carpentry, plumbing) or relevant vocational training.
  • Experience working in a school or institutional environment.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards specific to educational facilities.
