Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Special Effects (SFX) Workshop Assistant to join our creative fabrication team. This entry-to-mid-level role is perfect for an individual with a passion for hands-on creation, a keen eye for detail, and a desire to learn the ins and outs of practical special effects and fabrication. You will work closely with our experienced fabricators and designers, assisting in all stages of project development from concept realization to final installation. Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior fabricators and designers with the construction of props, models, sets, and practical effects.
- Prepare materials and workspaces, ensuring tools and equipment are clean, organized, and properly maintained.
- Perform basic fabrication tasks including cutting, sanding, gluing, painting, and finishing various materials (wood, foam, plastic, metal, etc.).
- Support the casting and molding processes, including mixing and pouring resins, silicones, and other compounds.
- Help with the safe handling, storage, and inventory of workshop materials and supplies.
- Participate in the assembly and breakdown of project components for testing or installation.
- Adhere strictly to all workshop safety protocols and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Learn and apply new fabrication techniques and material properties under guidance.
- Provide general support to the workshop operations as needed, contributing to a collaborative team atmosphere.
Required Skills
- Proven interest in practical effects, prop making, set design, or related creative fabrication fields.
- Basic proficiency with common hand and power tools (saws, drills, sanders, etc.).
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality craftsmanship.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively within a team.
- Good physical stamina and ability to lift and move materials as required.
- Basic understanding of workshop safety procedures.
- Effective communication skills and a positive, eager-to-learn attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience (personal projects, vocational training, or previous employment) in fabrication, carpentry, sculpture, model making, or artistic crafts.
- Familiarity with various materials such as foams, resins, epoxies, plastics, and wood.
- Experience with basic painting techniques, airbrushing, or scenic treatments.
- Knowledge of mold making and casting processes.
- Ability to read and interpret basic technical drawings or sketches.
- Portfolio of personal creative projects demonstrating relevant skills.
