Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Specialized Heavy Haul Escort Driver to join our dedicated team. As a Pilot Car Driver, you will play a crucial role in the safe and efficient transportation of oversized and overweight loads across the country. This position requires extensive travel, keen attention to detail, and the ability to navigate diverse road conditions while ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations. You will be responsible for leading or trailing oversized loads, providing clear communication to the lead driver and other road users, and proactively identifying and mitigating potential hazards. Key Responsibilities
- Operate pilot/escort vehicles safely and professionally in various weather and road conditions.
- Lead or trail oversized loads, maintaining appropriate distances and communication with the heavy haul truck driver.
- Monitor traffic, road conditions, and overhead clearances, and identify potential obstacles.
- Communicate effectively via two-way radio with drivers, dispatch, and other escort personnel.
- Ensure strict adherence to all state and federal heavy haul and pilot car regulations.
- Assist with route planning and pre-trip inspections of escort vehicles and equipment.
- Deploy warning signs, flags, and other safety devices as required.
- Complete necessary paperwork, including logs, trip reports, and incident reports.
- Represent Schneider National professionally to clients, law enforcement, and the public.
- Maintain a high level of vigilance and situational awareness throughout all trips.
Required Skills
- Valid Class C (or equivalent) Driver's License with a clean driving record.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional driving experience.
- Ability to travel extensively for extended periods.
- Strong understanding of traffic laws and safety regulations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to operate and maintain pilot car equipment (flags, signs, two-way radios, etc.).
- High degree of professionalism and responsibility.
- Physical ability to sit for long periods and perform light physical tasks related to vehicle operation and safety equipment deployment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a heavy haul pilot car or escort driver.
- Knowledge of specific state regulations for oversized/overweight loads across multiple states.
- Certification in pilot car operations from a recognized authority.
- Experience with GPS and navigation software for route planning.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for minor vehicle troubleshooting on the road.
