Job Description
Join the Washtenaw County Road Commission as a Traffic Sign Installation Laborer. This vital outdoor role involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs throughout Ann Arbor and the wider Washtenaw County. You will work as part of a dedicated team, contributing directly to road safety and clear navigation for the community. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, performing physical tasks, and making a tangible difference in their local area. Full training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and replace various types of traffic signs (e.g., stop signs, yield signs, street name signs, regulatory signs) according to established guidelines and specifications.
- Dig post holes, pour concrete, and erect signposts using hand and power tools.
- Safely load, unload, and transport signs, materials, and equipment to job sites.
- Perform routine maintenance on existing signs, including cleaning, straightening, and repairing damaged signage.
- Operate basic hand and power tools common to construction and outdoor labor.
- Adhere to all safety regulations, traffic control procedures, and organizational policies.
- Assist with traffic control setup and breakdown around work zones to ensure worker and public safety.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
- Work effectively as part of a team to complete projects efficiently and to high standards.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, digging, and standing for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Valid Michigan Driver's License with a clean driving record.
- Strong work ethic and a commitment to safety.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
- Basic understanding of measurements and ability to read simple diagrams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in general labor, construction, or outdoor maintenance.
- Familiarity with traffic signage regulations or MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices).
- Experience operating small power tools (e.g., post-hole diggers, drills).
- High School Diploma or GED.
