Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and community-focused individual to join our team as a Trainee Environmental Health Officer. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity within the public sector for someone passionate about environmental protection and public health. No prior experience is required, as comprehensive training will be provided to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to the health and safety of the City of Sparks. You will work under the guidance of experienced professionals, learning to conduct inspections, investigate complaints, and enforce environmental health regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior Environmental Health Officers in conducting routine inspections of diverse establishments, including food service facilities, public pools, and various community premises.
- Learn to investigate public health complaints, such as sanitation issues, pest infestations, and improper waste disposal, under direct supervision.
- Familiarize yourself with and apply local, state, and federal environmental health laws, codes, and regulations.
- Prepare clear and concise reports, maintaining accurate records of inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities.
- Participate in community outreach and educational initiatives to promote public health awareness and best practices.
- Conduct field visits to various locations throughout the City of Sparks to assess environmental conditions and compliance.
- Collaborate effectively with departmental staff, other city agencies, and community members to achieve public health objectives.
- Actively engage in all assigned training modules and professional development programs.
Required Skills
- Strong genuine interest in public health, environmental protection, and community service.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with colleagues, businesses, and the public.
- A proactive attitude and the ability to quickly learn and interpret complex regulatory information.
- Good observational skills and a methodical approach to problem-solving.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Possession of a valid Nevada Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe after hire, as travel within the city is required.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related scientific field.
- Previous volunteer or internship experience in a public service or environmental capacity.
- Basic understanding of public health principles and environmental hazards.
