Job Description

Are you passionate about the outdoors and eager to start a meaningful career in environmental conservation? The National Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Trainee Forestry Technician to join our team in the beautiful landscapes surrounding Lancaster. This is an incredible opportunity for individuals with little to no prior experience in forestry, as full training will be provided. You will gain hands-on experience in sustainable woodland management, habitat restoration, and practical conservation work within national parks and protected areas. This role is perfect for someone who loves physical work, enjoys being part of a team, and wants to make a tangible difference in protecting the UK’s natural heritage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with tree planting, felling, and pruning operations under supervision.
  • Participate in woodland maintenance, including thinning, coppicing, and habitat restoration.
  • Help with the control of invasive species to protect native flora and fauna.
  • Maintain and repair footpaths, bridleways, and access routes within National Trust properties.
  • Operate and maintain forestry tools and equipment safely, following all guidelines.
  • Assist with data collection and record-keeping related to woodland health and biodiversity.
  • Contribute to site safety checks and risk assessments.
  • Engage with visitors, answering questions and promoting conservation efforts.
  • Support emergency responses, such as storm damage clear-up, as required.

  • A strong passion for the outdoors and environmental conservation.
  • Willingness to learn and develop new practical skills in forestry and land management.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to work in varying weather conditions and challenging terrain.
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Reliability and good timekeeping.
  • Basic communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A full UK driving license.
  • An interest in ecology, botany, or natural history.
  • Prior experience with basic hand tools or outdoor manual work (e.g., gardening, farming) is a plus, but not essential.
  • Basic First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon joining).
